However, he wanted to enter the world of mainstream music. When he auditioned for American Idol Season 8, he was in. During the Hollywood weeks, he captured the judges and the audience interest with "Kiss from a Rose", "Somebody to Love", and "I Hope You Dance". After clearing the Top 36, Top 13, and Top 11 rounds, he now awaits the moment when he will strike the stage again as one of the Top 10 finalists. Judge Paula Abdul has voted Gokey one of the strongest contestants along with Lil Rounds.
