The first Academy Award for the evening went to Penelope Cruz in the Best Supporting Actress Category. Cruz won the award for her role in a raging and wild artist in Woody Allen's Spanish romance "Vicky Cristina Barcelona". The movie portrays Cruz as a precarious Spaniard in a arousing three-way affair with her ex-husband and an American woman.
Cruz began her acceptance speech by asking the audience, "Has anybody ever fainted here? Because I might be the first one". And then she moved on to thanking the director of the film Woody Allen, "Thank you, Woody, for trusting me with this beautiful character. Thank you for having written all these years some of the greatest characters for women".
