Haas was born in West Hollywood, California, the son of Emily Tracy, a writer, and Berthold Haas, an artist. He has two brothers, twins Simon Jakoway and Nikolai Johannes Haas, both musicians/artists.

At the age of five, he was discovered in his kindergarten by casting director Marjorie Simkin. Haas’s career has spanned more than twenty years during which time he has appeared in more than thirty-six feature films, as well as a number of television shows and theater productions. Haas is also a musician and plays drums and piano for a band called The Rogues. He has appeared in the music videos for My Chemical Romance's "Welcome to the Black Parade", OutKast's "Roses", and Death Cab For Cutie's "Cath".
