Rubina Ali in "Slumdog Millionaire"

Rafiq Qureshi, who was reported trying to sell his 9-year-old daughter Rubina Ali, has refuted the charge made by a British newspaper.

British tabloid ´News of the World´ alleged that father of Oscar-winner ¨Slumdog Millionaire¨ child star Rubina planned to put her up for adoption. The newspaper held it that Qureshi demanded millions of rupees, worth about $400,00, from undercover reporters who posed as a wealthy family from Dubai, and with an interest to adopt the girl.

Rubina´s mother, after hearing the news, had filed a complaint with Mumbai police on Sunday. Qureshi, now, denies any act of putting up Rubina for adoption. ”They played dirty with us, but we didn’t accept any money from them. My daughter is not for sale,” he tells BBC. A resident of Mumbai, Qureshi has told Mumbai police ”In India, you never say ‘no’ directly, least of all to guests. You try not to offend people by refusing to help. They said they were childless and desperately fond of Rubina after seeing her in the film. I felt sorry for them, but I was never going to give her up.“

Indian police are investigating the claims and counterclaims. The accusations have complicated the lives of the other slum-dwelling child stars of ¨Slumdog Millionaire¨ who have been under supervision since the film won international fame with 8 Oscars, and grossed more than $300 million worldwide.

Miss California Carrie Prejean and Hilton Perez (small)

Perez Hilton was one of the judges at Miss America beauty pageant, and he did not like the answer Miss California gave in response to his question. So now, its a war of words between Hilton and the pageant princess.

Miss California Carrie Prejean´s comments about same sex marriage has not only sparked controversy but also earned her the fury of contest judge Hilton. Prejean was competing at the Miss USA competition which was held at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The winner was Miss North Carolina USA Kristen Dalton who stole the crown beating 50 other contestants. However, it is runner up Prejean who has made news (…for all the wrong reasons though).

Perez Hilton asked Miss California ”Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalise same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit, why or why not?” The tall beauty queen seemed to stammer at first, before answering. In reply, she said ”Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one way or the other.” And continued ”We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage..You know what, in my country, in my family, I do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offence to anybody out there..But that’s how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman. Thank you.”

Prejean´s opinion led to mixed response from the audience. Some cheered, some booed. Judge Hilton, however, was noticeably resentful. He spited her calling her response, in his blog, ”the worst answer in pageant history“. Later, he also posted a video blog on his website where he said ”She lost not because she doesn’t believe in gay marriage, she lost because she’s a dumb b****!” According to Hilton, Prejean should have given a diplomatic answer. The answer he suggested was “Perez, that’s a great question and that’s a very hot topic in our country right now. I think it’s a question that each state should answer for themselves because that’s our forefathers designed our government. The states rule themselves and then there are certain laws that are federal.”

Hilton did apologize for calling Prejean a b****, but then, he took back his apology. The runner up´s comments also caused much behind the scenes talks at the event. Prejean believes that her opinion on gay marriage cost her the Miss USA crown. But she stands by what she said. She was quoted saying in an interview ¨It is a very touchy subject and he [Hilton] is a homosexual and I see where he was coming from and I see the audience would’ve wanted me to be more politically correct,” she added. “But I was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything.“

Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus

Billy Ray Cyrus is noticeably angry. Following Jamie Foxx´s comments on Miley Cyrus, the teen superstar´s father Billy Ray Cyrus has slammed the 41-year-old comedian for insulting his daughter. He has said that the comments were hurtful and far from being funny.

Jamie Foxx, on an episode of his weekly radio show ´The Foxxhole´, had verbally attacked Disney star MIley Cyrus saying ”Make a sex tape and grow up!” Comments made, in the background, by other guests included “Be like Britney Spears and do some heroin. Be like Lindsay Lohan and start seeing a lesbian…get some crack in your pipe. Now that’s what I want.”

Miley, in response, said to the talk show host Bonnie Hunt ¨It was hurtful, there wasn’t nothing funny about it, and quite frankly, I think if I said those things about his daughter he might not find it so comedic.¨

Foxx did apologize on Tuesday´s episode of ¨The Tonight Show¨ with Jay Leno. ”I have a radio show. We’re really the black Howard Stern. We go at everybody. There was a situation with Miley Cyrus, and I just want to say, I apologize for what I said. I didn’t mean it maliciously. You know I’m a comedian. You know my heart.“

But, it seems that Billy Ray Cyrus is not going to take the entire matter regarding his little girl so lightly.

Paris Hilton

If you remember, Paris Hilton was recently involved in a club fight. She was at the Fontainebleau Hotel nightclub in Miami, Florida, enjoying the Winter Music Conference with her boyfriend Doug Reinhardt. A brawl started between Doug and the club DJ Steve Angello’s bodyguards. According to Hilton, she was abused and pushed by the DJ’s bodyguard when she went up to request for songs. She claimed that her boyfriend was attacked by “six guys“.

DJ Angello, however, holds Hilton responsible for the violence. It was her bodyguards, he claims, who punched him in his face after he refused to play what Hilton had requested. “Paris’s story is a joke. She kept demanding I play hip-hop, not Madonna, Daft Punk or anyone else – I’m not a hip-hop DJ. I don’t have a bodyguard either. Her guy punched me first and I defended myself. No-one else was involved. She might be used to people saying yes to her 24/7, but she’s not going to get that from me. The Winter Music Conference is about the music, and that’s the reason people travel to it from all over the world. It’s not about spoilt girls getting what they want.“

The Bajan beauty cancels Indonesian tour. The much talked about and the controversial tour surrounding Rihanna, leaves her fans in Indonesia “traumatised”. Rihanna postponed a concert in the country for the second time, amid reports of a fight with boyfriend Chris Brown. Rihanna was reportedly left battered and bruised after a clash with her brick headed boyfriend. Chris allegedly assaulted and lashed out Rihanna the night before the couple was to perform at the Grammy night.

Rihanna’s pre-Grammy troubles with her boyfriend, Brown was a much talked about affair. Brown is said to be arrested and then set free on bail. Brown according to certain reports had even went so far to hit Rohanna with a weapon. But the weapon reports have not been confirmed. Rihanna reportedly lashed out at Brown after the latter was seen fooling around with a girl. The Grammy performance was cancelled. Rihanna who is acclaimed as The Umbrella hitmaker was due to perform in Jakarta on Thursday,12th Feb,09 but has been forced to pull out “because of an assault case involving Rihanna’s boyfriend”, according to tour promoter Showmaster.

Chris Brown, 19, was arrested for felony battery after an incident with a woman, believed to be Rihanna, in a vehicle in Los Angeles in the early hours of Sunday morning. The cops did not divulge the identity of the victim or the accused.

Rihanna’s present cancellation of the show is second time in a row. She axed a show in the Indonesian capital in November (08) following the issue of a travel warning by the Australian government after the executions of three men convicted of the 2002 bombings in Bali. And the cancellation is said to have devastated her fans and frustrated organisers.

Concert promoter Troy Reza Warokka says, “We spoke to (Rihanna representative) Tony Goldring of the William Morris Agency and he said the concert had to be cancelled because of an assault case involving Rihanna’s boyfriend. This is her second postponement (in Indonesia). Her fans are traumatised and we’ve spent so much money on production and promotional materials”.

Warokka has suggested that the 20-year-old may not be invited back to perform before the end of 2009, adding “He (Goldring) offered to reschedule but we don’t think we’ll take it up, not this year at least”.

Rihanna also postponed a sold-out concert in Malaysia which was scheduled on Tuesday, 10th feb.  These cancellations are a result of the assault incident which has left the Bajan beauty much traumatised and shattered.

Steven Gerrard

England mid-fielder Steven Gerrard who is regarded as a supreme soccer star has messed up his career with a brawl in Lounge Inn bar-restaurant. The ace 28 year old Liverpool star could well face up to five years in jail. He was arrested after being charged with assault last night over a punch-up in which a DJ was beaten.

Gerrard was with his friends celebrating his team’s victory over Newcastle on Sunday. He also celebrated for his two goals and a good 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle. All hell broke loose when Gerrard asked the DJ to hand him the playing card which allows one to change the music. DJ Marcus refused to hand him the card saying he could not alter the music policy.

A party witness said : “The whole thing lasted less than ten seconds. Gerrard was pulled out of the scrapping and it turned into a free-for-all…” Witnesses also said that there have been brawls earlier in the bar.

British soccer fans are shocked for Gerrard’s behaviour. England team boss Fabio Capello has already considered Gerrard for the 2010 World Cup.

Gerrard broke into a fight where part-time DJ Marcus McGee, 34, was wounded and needed four stitches to head wounds. Witnesses said there were Blood and shards of broken glass everywhere. The punch up took place on the floor of the pub which left England soccer hero Gerrard in police custody.

A shocked witness said: “Someone made a comment and it all went off.” Gerrard is believed to have gone through nine hours of police grilling.

Gerrard’s violent brawl comes after a few days when he spoke of the need for a crackdown on violence.

Gerrard who earns a whopping £120,000-a-week is reverred by young footballers for his 70 England caps feat.

DJ Marcus McGee was rushed to hospital after fighting broke out in the Lounge Inn bar-restaurant at around 2.30am yesterday.

Detectives reportedly spoke to witnesses and  rummaged through CCTV from the bar and surrounding streets.

Gerrard’s mansion home in Formby is close by from the crime scene. Marcus the DJ was with his friends who had an argument with Gerrard’s mates.

The witness said : “Marcus stepped in as peacemaker and it calmed down for a while. Everyone was drinking and having a good time. But when Marcus’s mates left, he was on his own and it was then that him and Gerrard started rowing by the dance floor.”

Dad-of-two Gerrard has captained England four times. Days ago he wrote a special Prayer for Liverpool for the city’s Anglican Cathedral. It read: “My hope for Liverpool for 2009 would be an end to gun and knife crime, making the city a place our kids can grow up to be proud of.”
