“A Situation called Injury” starring Cate Blanchett

by Eva on Sep.02, 2009, under accident

cate-joelOscar winner Cate Blanchett got into a minor accident on stage while performing Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer winning play “A Streetcar called Desire” in Sydney. This happened on Tuesday. Theater fans at the Sydney Theater Company witnessed the incident with a little late realization.

The play-situation was such that, Blanche Dubois, the character played by Blanchett was in an argument-scene with co-actor Joel Edgerton, who played the character Stanley Kowalski.

If the play would have gone as scripted, Edgerton would have thrown a radio out of a window. But the fate of the radio had something else written on it. It met Blanchett’s head instead of the stage floor. Donk!!!

It was 30 seconds later that Cate realized she could not go on anymore. “She had blood streaming down the back of her head and blood on the back of her neck” was what someone in the audience noticed. Many other people in the audience did not realize this. Blanchett hurried inside in a way that seemed like that was what the character had to do. The audience watched mesmerized thinking it was part of the script. “Before we knew it the lights were turned on and we were told there were technical difficulties and everyone had to evacuate the Sydney Theater Company.” was what another person reported about what happened after Blanchett left the stage.

The show was eventually canceled and everybody realized the intensity of the radio-blow! We have no news from Joel’s side. None too from Cate, but a source did say that the injury was minor. The theater officials have conveyed that Cate will be performing the play on Thursday night.

We definitely want the Aviator star to give a perfect performance next day. Hope her head is fine and no stitches were needed.
