Released in 2003, ‘The Room’ is a black comedy that questions the very basis of love, and friendship. Its electrifying potrayal of a world of love, passion, lies, and betrayal presented through five main characters has an impact that stays on. The movie was described by screenwriter Michael Rousselet as “hilarious, but, somehow, it was also pure brilliance. It was a perfect movie on how not to make a movie…” Written, directed and shot by Tommy Wiseau, The Room “lets you appreciate failure in a free-form way.” (screenwriter Dan Murphy who has seen the film at least five times). Wiseau claims that he purposely made the film bad.
In Los Angeles, ‘The Room’ had become a cult phenomenon. Its fans included everyone from college students to famous personalities. Now, its time for New Yorkers to enter (..or not enter) ‘The Room’. The film was shown on three screens at Village East Cinema in New York at midnight March 20. After the Los Angeles craze, it will be interesting to see how New York movie buffs receive the film.
The Room is a story of a man called Johnny (played by Tommy Wiseau) who is deceived by his fiance Lisa (Juliette Danielle) and best friend Mark (Greg Sestero). Juliette Danielle is brilliant as the conniving Lisa who uses her schemes to get Mark. Lisa’s manipulations ends in her own downfall. Mark, who otherwise has a good heart, falls in Lisa’s trap. The other two important character’s include Lisa’s mother Claudette (Carolyn Minnott), and an orphan boy Denny (Philip Haldiman).
“Director Tommy Wiseau’s style is reminscent of Tennessee Williams.“
