Edie Britt is dead. Yes folks. ´Desperate Housewives´ has got rid of Edie. Some may feel that her departure is good riddance. But, it was sad to see one of the most memorable characters of TV go. And it were the flashback stories- along with Edie as Mary Alice, the episode´s resident narrator- that made the episode so powerfully poignant. The episode started with Edie saying ”With all my neighbors surrounding me, I took my last breath. The good news? I died just like I lived — as the complete and utter center of attention.” She couldn’t have been more correct.
Edie´s friends living on Wisteria Lane – Gaby, Bree, Lynette, Karen, and Susan- have described her as ´sexy´, ´beautiful, ´strong´ and ´perceptive´. On their way to deliver the news of Edie´s death to her son Travers. the ladies passed the urn (filled with Edie´s ashes) and told stories which vividly brought back memories of Edie. It contained a surprise, a moralistic tidbit about the real estate agent who has been a witch in the past five episode.
Susan remembered how she had met Edie. They were friends, but they broke their friendship because Susan didn´t approve of Edie´s sexual relationship with a married man. However, it was Edie who had informed Susan that her husband was cheating. Though indulging in unscrupulous behaviour herself, Edie did care about her friends who were being wronged.
When Edie´s urn went to Lynette, she recounted how Edie always made her chemo sessions memorable. Once, before an appointment, Edie had dragged Lynette to a bar and made her drink tequila and play pool. She had said ”You need to start fighting this thing,” Edie intoned with verve. ”You’re even stronger than me — and that’s saying something.’‘ Now, that is surprising about a moralistic Edie. She did have a heart.
