Disney is back with its campaign for saving our planet. How? Through films of course. The studio, which had started big-screen nature movies in the 1940s, has come up with a new documentary film ¨Earth¨ that will be released on Earth Day. A beautifully shot film, it is the debut feature of Disneynature, Disney´s new label that plans to release an eco-friendly title every year.

¨Earth¨ provides its audience with some majestic shots of the planet after which it  focuses on a pair of two-month-old polar bear cubs as they follow their mother for shelter. Their father, who searches for food, faces one of the results of global warming as the once-solid ice breaks down under his paws. The camera then fixes on Kalahari desert, in Africa, where elephants head for the lush Okavango Delta to escape from draught. Though there are a number of animals and locations, ¨Earth¨ has one central theme- the struggle of animal species to find food and survive during climatic changes.

From millions of caribou walking across the tundra to mandarin duck chicks jumping from a tree, humpback whales migrating, and tropical birds with mating habits, the documentary captures some fantastic scenes from nature.  It is not only natural  beauty that makes up the film. There is suspense as well. The beginning moment of circle-of-life is a wolf attacking a caribou calf.  As the movie continues, riveting moments are shown, including infrared nighttime shots of 30 lions attacking an elephant.

Directors Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield have used nature photography (by 60 cameramen) to concentrate on three different animal families. James Earl Jones returns with his cozy narration. All that said, the compelling drama on ¨Earth¨ is less dangerous than the climate warming that our planet is actually facing. Disney´s ¨Earth¨ shows what Earth Day is about. It is a family film, and helps children get greener.
