American Idol Recap: How fared the Top 9

With growing popularity, American Idol have moved on from simple theme nights such as Country, Rock, R&B to more creative ones like Lennon & McCartney, Motown, and Tuesday (March 31) night’s “most popular songs downloaded from iTunes” theme. Yes, the theme selection has turned out quite random. Tuesday night saw the contestants perform popular iTunes downloads, which meant they could select any song they wanted. The thematic makeover brought to us everything from Gwen Stefani to Wild Cherry to No Doubt, The Fray, The Hopefuls, and Rascal Flatts. Such a wide range of choices, however, led to some bad choice-making. On stage, the ‘Idols’ ranged from ‘very good’ to ‘boring’.
Adam Lambert sang the fun Wild Cherry song “Play That Funky Music“. His on-stage representation of the song was very original and indeed, funky. Two weeks in a row, Adam has been superb. The switch from the smooth Smokey Robinson’s “Track of My Tears“, which he delivered last week, to yesterday’s vibrant song of Wild Cherry band has confirmed his brilliant vocal creativity, and spectacular control on the notes. Adam, without a doubt, is difficlut to beat. The other contestant who wowed the audience and the judges was Kris Allen. His perfectly soulful and spectacular “Ain’t No Sunshine” (the timeless Bill Withers song) established him as a front-runner on the Idol stage, and a worthy challenger to Adam Lambert. Kris gets better every week, and yesterday’s performance is his best till date.
Danny Gorkey did good work on Rascal Flatt’s “What Hurts The Most”. His was a heartfelt performance. The vocals were amazing, and his deliverance was solid. However, despite his strong presence, and vocal talent, Danny could not live up to the expectations he had roused in the audience through his past performances. What lacked was the energy and exuberance he has shown earlier. Danny was very good, but he has to be better in order to stay in the same line as Adam and kris. Scott Macintyre presented Billy Joel’s classic “Just The Way You Are“. His vocal output has made him safe, and he has definitely improved.
Lil Rounds shouldn’t have sung Celine Dion. She has a superior voice, but she couldn’t connect with the diva’s “I Surrender“. It was a wrong choice she made, and she messed up the pitch and the notes. Alison Iraheta, a natural rocker, started well with No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak“. But, she couldn’t keep up those vocals and the notes later. Unable to build her position and without a strong fan base, Allison has been placed in the bottom three.
Really bad were Annop Desai, Matt Giraud and Megan Joy Corkrey. Annop Desai was simply unbearable. Singing “Caught Up” by Usher. Anoop brought energy. But with such low-grade vocals, he definitely cannot be called an ‘artist’. Matt Giraud sang “You Found Me” by The Fray. Another bad choice. His performance was greatly inconsistent. Finally, Megan Joy Corkrey is out of the show. In the first place, she shouldn’t have been on American Idol. Her performances were bad, and yesterday, she was despicable singing Bob Marley’s “Turn Your Lights Down Low“. Sure she is hot and beautiful. But to stay on Idol, she needed a voice to sing.
Along with Allison, Matt and Megan featured in the bottom three. Megan has been sent home. And now, there are eight.
