Adam Lambert and Smokey Robinson

Smokey Robinson was impressed; the audience, spellbound. A hushed silence followed as finalist Adam Lambert finished singing “Tracks of My Tears” at American Idol’s Motown week on Wednesday night. The silence was broken by a thundering applause from the audience as well as the judges.Smokey Robinson, who was the guest judge at the show, rose to his feet.

In a sleek silver suit and with his hair brushed back like Elvis, the 26-year-old Lambert from Los Angeles had his pitch and the notes all in place. In fact his vocal creativity was perfect, and his performance totally smooth. The deliverance touched the heart of all those who heard him sing. Criticism from the judges came only in the form of appreciation. Somkey Robinson, who had originally sung the song, stated that no one had ever produced such a soft and superb interpretation of the classic. When Lambert asked Robinson what had inspired him to write “Tracks of My Tears”, the latter replied “to do it justice”.

Judge Simon Cowell called it the best performance of the night and added that Lambert “tonight really have emerged as a star”. Paula, apart from appreciting Lambert’s performance, loved his classy look. Kara found it awesome and said that it was ‘true artistry’. Way to go Lambert!
