The echoes, cheers and lunging went from loud to louder on Sunday when the Jonas Brothers performed. The fans as always went hysteric and mad at the JoBros concert at the Cobo Conference/Exhibition Center in downtown Detroit.
Joe Louis Arena was fully packed and resounded with screams of excitement and squeals of “Oh my God!” on the Sunday night when popular American boy band the Jonas Brothers performed.
The concert was part of the North American International Auto Show’s Charity Preview at Cobo Center on Friday. Anyone who bought a ticket to it received a free ticket to the Jonas Brothers concert Sunday.
Around 8:20 p.m., the lights went out, and the heavily packed female crowd from preschoolers to 20-somethings doubled their volume for their favourite “clean” boy band.
The familiar drumbeat to Queen’s “We Will Rock You” started. Someone laid into Brian May’s classic solo, but it wasn’t clear if it was a Jonas Brother because the lights were still out. The band’s logo was lowered and set ablaze, and finally the three Jonas Brothers – Nick, 16, Joe, 19, and Kevin, 21 – appeared on stage to deafening applause and screaming from the near-capacity crowd.
The audience’s energy went up with each momentary shift and entering into the programme. The brothers kicked off their 20-song set with “That’s Just the Way We Roll,” from their 2007 self-titled sophomore album. The crowd really sang along when it was time for the newer song “BB Good,” during which guitarist Nick Jonas belted out a rockin’ solo.
The show went into the highest point of glory during “Tonight” (the band’s most popular single), “Year 3000″ and “Don’t Close the Book.” Opening act Honor Society joined the guys for the latter.
There have been recent claims that the only band in history who could have reached the Beatles is Jonas Brothers seemed a little offfor an idea.
The screaming may have been in the style of Beatlemania, but the music wasn’t as powerful. The band suffers from simple, uninspired riffs and predictable lyrics. But what makes up for all these is the showmanship. Even serious lack of musicianship or songwriting is overshadowed by the slick stage show and the band’s undeniable charisma.
One of the hard core fans summed up the concert: “They are really good, and really cute.”
