Kanye West feels that Hip Hop has the right and the ability to make it to the top. West has urged fellow musicians to strive hard to reach to the top of the music charts. Kanye insisted that his peers had the talent to become as good and as legendary as The Beatles. Kanye said that artists should push their music in such a manner that it was like in the 60s in the 70s where people talked about and reverred Led Zeppelin and Hendrix and the Beatles. “…we will be the new Beatles, the new Hendrix…”, is what West strongly believes.

Kanye took his award for Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Album, in a first-time category at the 2008 American Music Awards on Sunday (23Nov08). He told the crowd while taking the award, “I want to thank everybody who accepted me trying to break new boundaries in music. I wake up in the morning and just think about what stereotypes I want to break and we push the envelope with the last album, with Stronger, with records they thought wouldn’t play on urban radio…And it’s our responsibility as musicians to keep pushing each other and keep competing with each other. It’s a really great competition…” Kanye also spoke of todays’s cutting edge music industry where there were artists like Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Chris Martin were competing and battling to make great music. Kanye said that todays’s music industry is hoped to make better music with better technology and techniques each bettering every day. Kanye clarified that he wanted to make music that could be labelled as legendary as themusic legends of the past. But he said that whenever “…you say you want to be Elvis, they say, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ But I don’t want to be Elvis.”

Kanye’s mission is to break new boundaries and records with his form of music. He was not making music to mimic legendary artists of the past. But he clarified that he and other contemporary artists were born to create better music and deliver a firm platform for themselves in order to do better than the past or even transcend past in form and quality. Kanye wanted present day listeners to take notice and someday wake up to the rising legendary status of Present music and start comparing with that of The Beatles.
